Pompeii

Scott and I decided that we both wanted to see Pompeii so we took a train to Naples to check it out. I did have a nervous moment on the train when someone asked me a question in Italian and Scott wasn't right by me to answer for me. I had no idea what he said and could only grimace and say sorry to which the guy just smiled and walked away.

Pompeii was a lot bigger than I thought it would be. We were there for a few hours but I'm not sure we saw everything, though at that point (and after Rome) I had seen enough ruins to last me a while. The scenery is beautiful! The valley is surrounded by mountains on three sides and the ocean on the other.

When we got back to Naples we had a few hours before our train left. There was a piazza and church not too far away from the station that we thought we'd see to kill time. The streets were so dirty! I've never seen anything like it. It was definitely dirtier than NYC. I'm sure there are nicer parts but I was a little disappointed that the main downtown area was so bad.
